When five tiny kittens arrived at the Animal Welfare League of Arlington in Virginia, they were motherless but full of curiosity. Foster volunteer Asa brought them home, and from day one, they were all over her—climbing into her lap, curling up on her arms, and napping wherever they could find warmth and love. The kittens, named Joe, Mr. Bean, Miss Tash, Cappuccino, and Inés, quickly made it clear they were craving comfort—and found it in their foster mom’s constant affection.
But it wasn’t long before another gentle soul joined the mix: Kona, Asa’s 8-year-old dog with a heart of gold and a deep love for kittens. Kona had to wait patiently until the kittens were medically cleared, spending days peeking into their pen with wagging excitement. When she was finally allowed in, it was like a joyful reunion—she lavished each kitten with kisses while they immediately clambered onto her, snuggled beside her, and began purring up a storm.
Among the bunch, Mr. Bean, the ginger kitten, became particularly attached, often wrapping his little arms around Kona and dozing off in bliss. Now, the once motherless kittens have found an unlikely but perfect surrogate in Kona, who never leaves their side. She grooms them, cuddles them, and keeps them warm—showing just how deep the bond can be between species when love leads the way.
