Kitten Who Can’t Use His Back Legs, Gets New Set of Wheels and Can’t Stop Running

When a tiny stray kitten named Bernard was discovered wandering the streets of Oxnard, California, his back legs weren’t working—but his spirit was unshakable. Rescued and brought to Ventura County Animal Services, Bernard quickly caught the attention of Jenifer Hurt from Wrenn Rescues. With no hesitation, she took him in and rushed him to Oaks Veterinary Urgent Care for a thorough check-up. Though vets couldn’t determine the exact reason for his paralysis—possibly a dislocation—they confirmed he’d need help expressing his bladder. But Bernard had no interest in feeling limited. From the very start, he was feisty, playful, and determined to move.

Jenifer was inspired by Bernard’s unstoppable energy and decided to give him the mobility he craved. Using parts from a toy car and a lot of creativity, she built a tiny cart—essentially a set of wheels tailored just for him. The moment she strapped it on, Bernard lit up. “He was off to the races with no hesitation,” said Alissa Smith of Wrenn Rescues. The brave tuxedo kitten zoomed around the room, thrilled with his newfound freedom. Watching him tear through the house with joy was proof that a physical limitation doesn’t define a life—especially not one as lively and resilient as Bernard’s.

As days passed, Bernard began showing signs of progress—starting to use one of his back legs occasionally. Though one leg remained unresponsive, it didn’t hold him back. His foster home became a playground where he ran, snuggled with his feline buddies, and purred himself to sleep after a full day of adventure. Plans are already in motion to upgrade his wheels, but for now, Bernard is thriving—embracing every moment with the heart of a kitten who never stops running toward life.
